Indoor Ship Bill introduced in Lok Sabha

A Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday to bring about uniformity in the use of laws relating to internal waterways and shipping in the country. Introducing the Interior Ships Bill 2021, Sarbananda Sonowal, who recently took charge of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said that this bill has been brought for safety in shipping, protection of life, and prevention of pollution. He said the Inland Shipping Bill would encourage cheap and safe transport.

The Bill will bring about uniformity in the use of legislation relating to internal waterways and shipping within the country. The bill will ensure transparency and accountability in the administration of internal water transport. In addition, it will strengthen the internal ship administration process and their construction, survey, registration, personnel requirement, and shipping. Presently 4000 km of inland waterways are in operation within the country.
